Funafuti, Tuvalu; 27 December 2017: Christmastime has brought a present for all the aspiring tradies in Tuvalu who have wanted an opportunity to study, through the launch of the Tuvalu Atoll Science and Technology Training Institute (TASTTI) last week.
Prime Minister Enele Sosene Sopoaga as Minister for Public Utilities and Infrastructures launched TASTTI in Funafuti on 20 December 2017.
“It is lobbied in our national strategies to provide high quality education; to equip people with hands-on knowledge and skills to develop more self-reliance, as well as resilience against the impacts of climate change” he said.
“TC Pam 2015 effects made us want to build our resilience and it is now central in our national strategies to do just that.
Acting Director of Public Works Department (PWD) Malofou Simati said, “PWD has the capacity to facilitate the institute and teach hands-on skills to people of Tuvalu. We are ready to implement aspirations of the Government through this Atoll Science and Technology Training Institute with staff that have the necessary qualifications to deliver the kind of education.”
Enele Sopoaga said it is imperative that the institute offers hands-on skills for all interested Tuvaluans and not necessarily degree level qualifications.
He said the initiative will be implemented according to what Government has approved.
Avafoa Irata, CEO of the ministry said, “The first intake will be next month and in the next few weeks, PUI with the help of educationalist Katalina Taloka will identify courses and modules to be taught at the Institute.”
